


Al Ain gives us the best radar ground in the country. Dry inland sand and gravel with the water table well below the surface means the signal runs deep and the data is clean, so surveys here reach the top of the 5–10 m range that coastal sites rarely allow. We survey the dig area with the Proceq GS8000, mark buried services on the surface, and issue a report before excavation begins.
Radar depth is decided by moisture and salinity, and Al Ain has little of either. Inland desert sand and dry gravel plains with a low water table let the signal penetrate properly, which is why a survey here can genuinely answer questions about deeper services that we would have to hedge on in Abu Dhabi Island sabkha or reclaimed coastal ground.
Al Ain is green because of an extensive buried irrigation network, and much of it is plastic, much of it is old, and a good deal of it was laid without any record surviving. Landscaping works, road widening and plot development all run into it. Electromagnetic locators cannot see plastic irrigation lines at all, which is precisely why radar is the right instrument here.
Parts of Al Ain sit close to protected archaeological and heritage areas where any ground disturbance is scrutinised. Radar is entirely non-invasive — a cart pushed over the surface, nothing dug, nothing disturbed — so a survey can be run before ground is broken and before approvals are sought, rather than as a reaction to something found mid-dig.
